Season’s Greetings Fitness Enthusiasts!
No, It’s no longer the Holiday Season, it’s FITNESS Season. So much hype, so much hope. How do you differentiate between what is real and what is a trap in the world of health and fitness. How do you turn your newfound enthusiasm (possibly a New Year’s resolution?) into long term gains, sustained weight loss, and a new way of life? How do you avoid the pitfalls that plague many new fitness enthusiasts, and quell their desire for physical change for another year or more? Use the following guidelines to start off on the right path to your goals!
First, it all starts with motivation. What are your reasons for wanting to change your eating habits or activity level? Make a list, and keep it somewhere you can see it (on your phone, or on the refrigerator). Some of your reasons may include: improve physical appearance, lower cholesterol, sustained weight loss, and increased energy. Add to this list when you discover new benefits to your more healthy lifestyle. Then, every time you need motivation, take a look at your list!
Next, avoid fad diets and sensationalist claims. For more information, here is a link to my post about the importance of using proven methods to achieve your fitness goals: http://www.fowfitness.com/blog/the-importance-of-proven-methods
Let me further add that some gyms will entice you with cheap memberships and no support, or they may even encourage bad practices. Did you know that there is a major fitness chain that offers free pizza parties on thursdays to its clientele? Stay far, far away from these places, because they do not have your best interests at heart.
Finally, if you are lost or have any questions, ASK! Ask that guy at the gym who is in excellent shape, or that woman who runs for an hour on the treadmill and doesn’t even break a sweat. Obviously, they’re doing something right, and if you approach them in the right way and at the right time (ie. AFTER their workout, more on that in my next blog post on Gym Etiquette), they will likely share with you their secrets to success.
